The third week of the 2025 NFL preseason saw a mix of promising performances and concerning signs for various teams. Here are some key takeaways from Saturday’s action.
Rasheen Ali and D’Ernest Johnson, both running backs on the Baltimore Ravens, showcased impressive skills in their battle for a roster spot. Both players displayed bounce and cutting ability, and their stat lines were comparable at the end of the game. However, it remains to be seen whether either player will secure a spot on the team.
The Washington Commanders’ quarterback situation behind Jayden Daniels is concerning. Marcus Mariota has been sidelined by Achilles tendinitis, and Sam Hartman has struggled in his second start, throwing three turnovers against Baltimore backups. Josh Johnson had a harder time moving the ball but was 7-of-13 passing for 50 yards.
The Bengals WR’s future is uncertain, with Jermaine Burton dealing with a knee injury that may impact his availability for the season. Mitchell Tinsley sat out, confirming his roster spot is safe, while Charlie Jones and Charlie Burton will share return duties. Burton caught one of four targets for 16 yards but struggled on a potential drive-extending third-down pass.
Colts safety Daniel Scott made a big play in Saturday’s preseason finale, stepping in front of Desmond Ridder and prancing to the end zone for a pick-six. The Colts need depth help at safety, and Scott’s performance should help him secure that role.
The Browns TE of the future, Harold Fannin Jr., played 11 snaps with the starters and caught two passes, including a touchdown from Joe Flacco. David Njoku also played 12 snaps and had nice connections with Flacco. The Browns will likely use multiple-TE formations this season.
Rookie tight end Terrance Ferguson made his preseason debut for the Rams, catching two passes for 48 yards on three targets. The Rams have talked about using more 12 personnel, with Ferguson and Tyler Higbee playing together. Ferguson played 21 snaps on offense and looked spry in his first game action.
Lions rookie WR Isaac TeSlaa continued to impress, burning past Texans cornerback D’Angelo Ross for a 33-yard score. TeSlaa displayed traits that will translate to the regular season, including size and speed. His production in the preseason indicates he should have a role on the Lions offense.
The Houston Texans’ backfield is worth checking in on due to Joe Mixon’s lingering foot/ankle injury. Nick Chubb didn’t play, while rookie Woody Marks displayed excellent vision and patience. Marks finished with 19 yards on six carries and a 9-yard TD run, making him an intriguing back who could push for reps.
The Broncos’ offense is still working out some kinks, particularly in the secondary. Cornerback Kool-Aid McKinstry was beaten three times by Courtland Sutton for three catches and 64 yards. If there’s an area that’s a little shaky on defense heading into the regular season, it’s probably in the secondary.
In conclusion, while some teams showed promise, others had concerning signs. As the preseason continues, these performances will help shape teams’ rosters and depth charts come cutdown day.
