The Republican Party may gain up to seven seats in the House of Representatives through redistricting, according to analysts and state legislators. This could put the party ahead of Democrats in the chamber for the first time since 2021.
In Texas, Republicans are trying to add five new districts to their current 25 seats, which would give them a total of 30 seats if all goes well. California’s Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom has signed a bill that redraws several districts to counteract the Republican plan.
Indiana, Missouri, Ohio, and Florida are also considering redistricting plans that could potentially benefit Republicans. However, the process is becoming increasingly complex due to legal and procedural challenges.
Analysts say that if Democrats flip five of the targeted seats in California, they would control 48 seats, while Republicans would have just four. The outcome depends on how effectively each state can redraw its maps without running into opposition from court challenges or lawsuits.
The G.O.P.’s efforts to gain seats through redistricting come as President Trump frets that Democrats could gain control of the House after next year’s elections.
