Measles Outbreak Warned on NJ Transit and PATH Trains

A warning has been issued for possible measles exposure on NJ Transit and PATH trains, according to New Jersey health officials. A resident in Hudson County was diagnosed with measles after using public transportation while potentially infectious.

Commuters who traveled on specific routes between August 13-15 may have been exposed to the virus. The affected areas include:

* NJ Transit Hudson-Bergen Light Rail: 8th Street, Bayonne to Hoboken branch (9am-11:30am and 6pm-9pm)
* 8th Street Light Rail Station in Bayonne (9am-11am and 7pm-9pm)
* PATH Newark – World Trade Center Line: Exchange Place Station in Jersey City (9:15am-11:45am and 5:45pm-8:30pm)

The resident was infected after close contact with someone from out of state who had measles. This is the seventh confirmed case of measles in New Jersey this year.

Symptoms of measles include a high fever, cough, runny nose, watery red eyes, and a flat red rash that appears 3-5 days later. The virus spreads through coughing, sneezing, mucus, and saliva, and can remain airborne for up to two hours after the infected person leaves.

If you think you have measles or have been exposed, contact your healthcare provider before visiting a doctor’s office or emergency room. Those who have not received both doses of the MMR vaccine are at higher risk of infection.
