Israeli forces have launched a ground invasion of Gaza City, killing at least 63 Palestinians and pushing deeper into the city. The attacks have also led to eight more deaths from starvation, bringing the total death toll to 281 since Israel’s war on Gaza began nearly two years ago.
The United Nations has declared a famine in Gaza, with experts warning that 500,000 people face “catastrophic” hunger. The UN has accused Israel of “systematic obstruction” of aid deliveries to the war-ravaged Palestinian territory, and Secretary-General Antonio Guterres described the famine as a “man-made disaster”.
The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) system says 514,000 people in Gaza are experiencing famine, with the number due to rise to 641,000 by the end of September. Many Palestinians in Gaza are at risk from malnutrition.
Israel has enforced a unilateral aid delivery mechanism, which has been rejected by the UN and major relief groups as illegitimate and failing to adhere to humanitarian principles. Since May 27, Israel has killed over 62,600 Palestinians in Gaza, including more than 2,076 who have died while seeking aid.
