At least 18 people have been killed and dozens injured in two separate attacks in Colombia, deepening the country’s security crisis.
A car bomb exploded on a busy street in Cali, killing six people and injuring over 60 others. The blast targeted the Marco Fidel Suarez Military Aviation School.
Earlier, a drone attack against a police helicopter in Medellin killed at least 12 officers. This attack is attributed to the EMC guerrilla group, a dissident faction of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (Farc) group.
The attacks have raised concerns about the country’s fragile peace processes ahead of elections next year. The government has announced a security council meeting to define additional protection measures for citizens.
President Gustavo Petro and Defense Minister Pedro Sánchez have vowed to pursue those responsible with “the full force of the law.” The government is also offering a $10,000 reward for information about the attacks.
