Bears Coach Ben Johnson Focuses on Offense’s Slow Start

Bears head coach Ben Johnson wrapped up his first preseason with a 2-0-1 record, but he was not satisfied with the performance of Chicago’s offense. Despite winning the recent AFC Championship Game participants, Johnson remained fixated on the team’s sloppy play.

Johnson criticized the Bears’ offense for their poor starts in both possessions, which lasted nine plays and went 22 yards without producing a first down. The team punted twice, while Kansas City responded with points. Johnson singled out quarterback Caleb Williams, who fumbled the first snap of the game and was sacked on a second-and-3.

Johnson expressed disappointment with his team’s performance but highlighted the positive aspects of their response in the next two drives. Williams finished 11-of-15 passing for 113 yards and a touchdown pass to Rome Odunze, with eight first downs and 10 points.

Despite the slow start, Johnson emphasized that he is committed to continuing to develop his offense. He assured that they will review the game footage and work on addressing specific issues, such as urgency in the huddle and holding onto the ball too long in the pocket.

Johnson reiterated that his playbook will remain unchanged ahead of their Week 1 opener against the Minnesota Vikings on Monday Night Football. The team’s focus is to execute their offense effectively, with a plan to stress the defense throughout the game.
