Apple in Talks to Use Google’s AI Model for Siri Overhaul

Apple is reportedly discussing incorporating Google’s Gemini artificial intelligence models into its Siri voice assistant, with shares rising 3% on the news. The move comes as both tech giants face uncertainty over their search deals, with a US judge set to rule on penalties for Google’s alleged search monopoly.

Google’s Gemini models have consistently topped AI performance benchmarks, but Apple has struggled to define its own AI strategy. However, Google faces potential risks to its lucrative search deals with Apple, including the possibility of losing its position as default assistant on Android phones.

The talks come after Apple executive Craig Federighi mentioned the need for additional AI models in its Apple Intelligence framework during last year’s developer conference. Google is also exploring partnerships with Anthropic and OpenAI to renew its AI roadmap. No official comment from Google has been made on the matter, but documents revealed during a recent trial showed executives from Apple were involved in negotiations over using Gemini for a potential search option.
