“Ron Howard’s ‘Eden’ Brings Peril to the Galapagos”

In Ron Howard’s latest historical drama, “Eden,” a tangled web of erotic escapades and brutal violence unfolds on the remote island of Floreana in the Galápagos archipelago. Jude Law stars as Friedrich Ritter, a philosophical doctor driven by a desire to “save humanity from itself” after World War I.

Ritter’s unconventional lifestyle attracts unwanted attention when he begins sending prose accounts to a German newspaper, only to find himself compromised by the arrival of a starry-eyed fan and his quiet wife. The island’s growing population is further disrupted by the introduction of a self-styled Baroness, played with flair by Ana de Armas.

As tensions rise, “Eden” descends into chaos, featuring erotic shenanigans, brutal violence, and even harrowing acts of self-sacrifice. Despite being led by director Ron Howard, known for more mainstream fare, the film’s bold subject matter is handled with aplomb by its talented cast. De Armas shines as the Baroness, bringing to life a character both venal and absurd.

“Eden” is rated R for language, violence, and sexuality and runs 2 hours 9 minutes.
