HDMI 2.2 Spec Release Expected on January 6th

The HDMI Forum will announce a new spec release on January 6th, enabling higher resolutions and refresh rates with a new cable. The update is likely to be HDMI 2.2, as hinted at by the organization’s email. This new standard could support higher resolutions without the need for Display Stream Compression.

The current specification, HDMI 2.1, has limited capabilities, supporting 48Gbps bandwidth, up to 120Hz variable refresh rates, and resolutions up to 10240 x 4320. The upcoming update may allow for more advanced features, such as higher resolutions and framerates.

While it’s unlikely that the port itself will be changed, a new cable may be required to take full advantage of the updated spec. However, existing HDMI cables may still work with some limitations, making it possible to use old cables with the new standard.
