Peruvian tennis player Ignacio Buse is set to face his former coach, Bryan Shelton, in the first round of the US Open. The 21-year-old will be playing against Shelton, currently ranked No. 6 in the PIF ATP Rankings, at Ashe Stadium.
Buse’s journey to this match began at the Country Club de Villa in Peru, where his father Hans Buse was his coach since he was two or three years old. His passion for tennis grew from a young age, and by the time he was 11 or 12, Ignacio was able to beat his father in a tie-break, sparking a competitive spirit that helped him reach No. 9 in the ITF Junior Rankings.
Despite not attending college due to visa issues, Buse has still had an impressive career. He won against Nicolas Jarry last year as a 19-year-old ranked outside the Top 400 and now trains at the Tennis Empowerment Centre Carles Ferrer Salat under coach Juan Lizariturry. Buse also credits renowned chef Gaston Acurio for his support, who told him to “beat this guy!” during their phone conversation on Friday.
As for Shelton, Buse fondly recalls his visit to the University of Florida in 2022, where he met Ben, Shelton’s son and then a top-ranked player. Although Buse ultimately chose to attend college elsewhere, he remains positive about facing his former coach, calling him “a really good guy” and looking forward to their match.
