A heat wave is impacting more than 30 million people across the West, with extreme heat warnings in effect for cities including Seattle, Portland, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, and Phoenix. Temperatures will soar near 90 degrees Fahrenheit in Seattle on Sunday afternoon and reach the upper 90s in Portland. The heat advisory affects Riverside and Sacramento, California, and Spokane, Washington.
Multiple daily record-high temperatures were set in several cities, including Eugene, Oregon, and Olympia, Washington, which reached 99 and 93 degrees respectively. Phoenix also broke its previous record low of 90 degrees on Saturday morning, reaching a new low of 92 degrees.
Temperatures will gradually drop off early this week with more substantial heat relief expected by the middle of the week. However, the extreme heat and dry conditions are fueling fires in the West, including the Pickett Fire in Napa County, California, which has burned over 6,800 acres.
A tropical storm, Fernand, is also forming in the Atlantic, with a 30% chance of development over the next seven days. The National Hurricane Center is monitoring two tropical disturbances, but neither is expected to have any impact on the U.S.
