New York Yankees shortstop Anthony Volpe is leading the American League in errors, but his latest blunder has fans questioning his manager’s defense.
Volpe committed a bizarre mistake in the ninth inning of Friday’s game against the Boston Red Sox, nearly allowing the Red Sox to score another run. With Red Sox closer Aroldis Chapman coming in, a 2-0 deficit seemed insurmountable. However, Volpe made an error by throwing the ball pointlessly to second base after fielding a ground ball, giving the Red Sox what reporter Chris Kirschner called “a free base runner.”
Yankees manager Aaron Boone defended Volpe’s play, saying it was not an out but a “heads-up” move. He also seemed to contradict himself by praising the play as both good and bad. This defense has left Yankee fans frustrated.
Despite his numerous errors, Volpe did manage to throw out Red Sox outfielder Jarren Duran at home two batters later, showing some redemption. However, the Yankees’ offense struggled, with lefty starter Max Fried allowing a single run in six innings.
