Yankees manager Aaron Boone defended star shortstop Anthony Volpe after committing his 17th error of the season in a lopsided loss to the Red Sox. The error came on a David Hamilton grounder, and Volpe’s play has been under scrutiny after a mental mistake earlier in the week that allowed Jarren Duran to reach base safely.
Volpe has hit an 0-for-28 drought and is batting .169 in August, with an OPS of .675 on the season. His struggles have led to more frequent boos from the crowd at Yankee Stadium. The Yankees’ manager suggested Volpe may need a breather, considering he now has an option at shortstop in trade-deadline acquisition José Caballero.
Boone defended Volpe’s error, saying it was “just one bad throw” and that he had been playing well overall. However, the manager also acknowledged that Volpe made another mental mistake earlier in the week, which allowed Duran to reach base safely. A break for Volpe could be beneficial as he struggles to find his form at the plate.
With Caballero now on the roster, Boone may consider giving Volpe a breather to help him regain his confidence and form. The question remains whether this break will be enough to turn around Volpe’s struggling season.
