Box Office Battle Heats Up This Weekend

This weekend’s box office saw a narrow victory for Zach Cregger’s action film “Weapons”, which took home $25 million with a solid 43% hold over, making it the eighth-best August hold ever for a film opening over $25 million. The movie’s total is now at $89 million, and if it continues on this path, it could reach as much as $160 million by next weekend.

On the other hand, Disney’s “Freakier Friday” remained in second place with an estimated $14.5 million for its second weekend. This film is ahead of The Princess Diaries 2 in terms of August family films and has a better model to follow until further notice.

Marvel’s “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” continued to drop harder than expected, but it should still reach the $500 million milestone globally. Meanwhile, James Gunn’s “Superman” is just shy of $600 million worldwide and will be put to the test when Supergirl arrives next June.

Other notable releases include “Jurassic World: Rebirth”, which has been a success for Universal despite signs of decline in previous entries. The film made another $2.9 million this weekend, bringing its domestic total to $496.1 million overseas.

Outside of the top 10, films like “F1: The Movie” and “Rajinikanth in Coolie” continued to perform well, while others like “Shin Godzilla” and “Together” struggled to gain traction. New releases like “Honey Don’t”, “Relay”, and “Eden” will have to compete with these established films for viewers’ attention next weekend.

With only two weeks left until Labor Day weekend, the box office is heating up in a battle to catch 2024’s $3.63 billion.
