US auto safety regulators have launched an investigation into over 1.4 million Honda and Acura vehicles due to engine failure risks. The recall covers models from 2016-2020 for Acura MDX, Pilot, TLX, and Odyssey, as well as 2017-2019 Honda Ridgeline.
According to reports, hundreds of drivers have experienced engine failures caused by faulty connecting rod bearings. At least four incidents led to crashes or fires, but no injuries or deaths have been reported.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration initially investigated the issue in November 2023 after receiving 414 reports of engine failure. However, regulators closed the original investigation after discovering that some engine failures were not caused by the same manufacturing defect identified earlier.
A new probe has now been opened to further evaluate the scope and severity of potential safety issues. The NHTSA is urging owners of affected vehicles to check their engines for any signs of damage or malfunction.
