Get ready for a spectacular celestial event in early August – the “planet parade”. On Monday, Aug. 25, just before dawn, six planets will be visible in the sky: Saturn, Jupiter, Venus, Uranus, Neptune, and Mercury. Although Mercury’s appearance is brief, it will still make its mark.
Venus and Jupiter will dominate the scene, shining brightly as they appear about 12 degrees apart from each other. Saturn will be visible in the southwest, higher than Mercury but fainter than the other two planets. To spot Mercury, head east with an unobstructed view about 45 minutes before sunrise.
However, time is short, and Mercury’s appearance will fade quickly due to its low altitude. The parade will be reduced to five planets by next week.
It’s essential to note that this event is not a rare “planetary alignment” – the planets orbit the sun in nearly circular paths within the same flat plane. What you’re witnessing is actually the planets appearing in their natural positions across the sky, as seen from Earth.
The “planet parade” will be followed by another spectacular event in October 2028, when five planets will be visible together before sunrise. For now, mark your calendars for early August and enjoy the celestial display.
