Young Brazilian Lawyer Dies After Routine CT Scan

A 22-year-old law graduate, Leticia Paul, has died after suffering an allergic reaction to contrast dye during a routine CT scan at Alto Vale Regional Hospital in Rio do Sul, Brazil. According to her aunt, Paul was immediately rushed to the hospital but died less than 24 hours later.

The reaction was triggered by the iodinated contrast dye injected before the scan. Anaphylactic shock is a life-threatening allergic reaction that can cause severe symptoms such as airway constriction and blood pressure drop.

Paul had been undergoing a routine checkup for her medical issue, kidney stones, before the incident. She was cremated at the Vatican Crematorium in Balneário Camboriú.

The hospital has released a statement expressing its solidarity with Paul’s family and emphasizing its commitment to ethics, transparency, and patient safety. While contrast dye is widely used and usually safe, life-threatening reactions are rare, occurring in only about 1 in every 5,000 to 10,000 patients.
