Typhoon Kajiki Bears Down on Vietnam

Vietnam has taken drastic measures to prepare for the powerful storm Typhoon Kajiki, which is expected to make landfall on Monday afternoon. The typhoon is packing winds of up to 166 kph (103 mph) and is forecast to bring heavy rains, flooding, and landslides.

The government warned that this is an “extremely dangerous fast-moving storm” and ordered the evacuation of over half a million people. Two airports in Thanh Hoa and Quang Binh provinces have been shut down, with dozens of flights cancelled by Vietnam Airlines and Vietjet.

Typhoon Kajiki’s path was previously expected to skirt southern China’s Hainan Island, but instead skidded past it on Sunday, forcing the city of Sanya to close businesses and public transport. The storm is similar in power to Typhoon Yagi, which devastated the country last year, killing around 300 people and causing $3.3 billion in property damage.

As Kajiki approaches, Vietnam’s long coastline makes it vulnerable to deadly storms that can trigger dangerous flooding and mudslides. Residents are being advised to stay indoors and follow evacuation orders as the storm bears down on the country.
