US Abandons mRNA Vaccine Research Under Biden Admin

US health secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s anti-vaccine stance has put the country at risk of losing a strategic medical advantage, according to former Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA) head Rick Bright.

In an alarming New York Times article, Bright warned that abandoning mRNA vaccine research would be akin to ceding a missile defense system for biology. The technology allows for rapid design, production, and deployment of medical countermeasures, which is crucial in national security terms.

Bright likened the US’s lead in mRNA research to a military advantage, which RFK Jr.’s skepticism could easily jeopardize. He noted that if the US abandons this technology, it would not only forfeit a public health advantage but also cede a strategic asset.

The former BARDA head highlighted China as a major competitor in this “biomedical arms race.” A recent visit to China showed high enthusiasm for mRNA-based innovation, which could give the country an edge over the US.

Kenneth Bright fears that losing this competitive edge would leave the US vulnerable and dependent on others for lifesaving tools. This development comes amid concerns about RFK Jr.’s first-hand experience in the scientific community.
