The Double-Edged Sword of Artificial Intelligence

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become a buzzword in recent years, with its potential to revolutionize various aspects of human life. A two-day meeting organized by the All Africa Council of Churches and the Future of Life Institute brought together religious leaders to discuss AI’s impact on African societies, its ethical concerns, and the role of religious leaders in governing its use.

On one hand, AI has the potential to transform education, healthcare, engineering, agriculture, business, and even theology. For instance, medical surgeries can become easier with AI-assisted complex operations, requiring less time and personnel. AI software like Chat GTP can also generate sermons for congregations. However, there are concerns about the projected bad consequences of AI, including job losses and manipulation through social media.

The over-reliance on machines is expected to lead to significant job losses, with estimates suggesting 30 million jobs will be lost by 2026. Social media algorithms can also be used to spread misinformation and disrupt social harmony. Moreover, AI-powered solutions are being used to replace humans in solving social-psychological issues, raising questions about the ability of machines to provide quality counseling.

The upcoming Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) may exacerbate these concerns. With self-directed machines competing with humans for intelligence, the world is at risk of self-destruction. Powerful organizations like the United Nations are being pushed aside by private companies racing to outsmart each other in AI. This raises questions about who should be regulated: governments or private companies?

As we move forward, it’s essential for African religious leaders and all right-thinking members of society to appeal to governments and trans-national organizations to curb the development of AI that may have adverse effects on humanity.
