Young Law Student Dies After Severe Allergic Reaction During CT Scan

A 22-year-old law student, Leticia Paul, died from a severe allergic reaction while undergoing a routine medical procedure at the Alto Valle Regional Hospital in Brazil. The allergic reaction occurred during a contrast-enhanced CT scan, which uses X-rays and computer processing to create detailed cross-sections of the body.

The hospital confirmed that it is cooperating with an investigation into the incident, but has stated that all procedures are conducted according to recommended clinical protocols. The use of iodinated contrast, a chemical substance injected into a vein during such scans, was reported as the cause of the allergic reaction.

While severe allergic reactions from the contrast are rare, occurring in approximately one to 5,000 cases, most people experience mild symptoms such as warmth, nausea, or itching after an IV injection.
