Apple is reportedly planning a 20th anniversary iPhone with a wraparound glass design, a concept that has been revealed in numerous patent filings. The new design features a single piece of glass covering the front and back of the device, unlike the traditional glass front and back combination.
According to Bloomberg, this curved design will be paired with Apple’s upcoming Liquid Glass user interface, which is currently in beta testing. However, there are concerns that mass-producing such a design may not be feasible due to patent filings revealing the complexity of the process.
Early patents suggest that the wraparound glass concept could include transparent glass backs and sides, allowing for additional displays on the device. These displays would also be touch-sensitive, transforming the side and back surfaces into interactive input devices.
The 20th anniversary iPhone design is reminiscent of Apple’s 10th-anniversary iPhone X, which marked a significant shift in smartphone technology. If Apple follows through with this new design, it could coincide with the launch of its Liquid Glass iOS in 2025, potentially introducing the feature alongside the new hardware.
While there are valid concerns about mass-producing such a design, early patent filings suggest that it is theoretically possible. With over two years between the rumored release and the actual product, Apple may be using this time to fine-tune production processes and prepare for its official launch.
