Cal Raleigh Sets Catcher HR Record with Big Flies

Major League Baseball catcher Cal Raleigh has broken the record for most home runs in a season by a catcher, with 48 this year. Raleigh, who is on pace to hit 61 home runs, surpassed Salvador Perez’s previous record of 40 home runs set as a catcher.

Raleigh’s milestone came after hitting two moonshots off Athletics left-hander Jacob Lopez yesterday. The 28-year-old has been quiet since the All-Star break but has now slugged his way back into the headlines.

To put Raleigh’s achievement in perspective, he is just one homer away from breaking another record – Javy López hit 42 home runs as a catcher in 2003.

Raleigh’s pace suggests that he will break multiple records over the final 31 games of the season.

The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal also discussed how the Padres make the three-closer thing work, with reliever Mason Miller explaining his approach to pitching in any role for the team. The conversation highlights the Padre’s commitment to performance and winning.
