Syria’s new caretaker government, led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) leader Ahmed al-Sharaa, aims to provide basic services to civilians and prevent a power struggle between armed groups over state resources and ministries. Mohammed al-Bashir has been appointed as the head of the caretaker government until March 1.
The move is seen as an attempt to stabilize the country and address the humanitarian crisis caused by more than half a century of President Bashar al-Assad’s rule. The new leadership promises punishment for crimes committed during Assad’s rule, but experts question its ability to carry out this massive exercise.
Meanwhile, Israel continues to expand its military operations in Syria, including the occupied Golan Heights, where the Israeli government has approved a plan to double the population of settlements. This move is seen as a significant escalation by the international community.
Despite these challenges, the interim government in Syria reopened schools and universities, prompting thousands of students to hold celebrations across the country. The caretaker government also announced plans to reopen domestic flights and offer military training to Syria.
The situation on the ground remains volatile, with Israeli forces blocking roads between Syrian cities and unexploded ordnance killing civilians. However, with the reopening of schools and universities, there is hope for a gradual return to normalcy in Syria.
