The Russia-Ukraine war has entered its 1,024th day, with fighting intensifying on Saturday, December 14.
Russia launched an aerial attack on Ukrainian energy facilities, severely damaging them and leaving the grid vulnerable to future attacks. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described this as one of the largest attacks yet and urged Western support for Ukraine.
Moscow fired at least 93 missiles that damaged several power plants, according to the DTEK energy company. In response, Ukrainian drones attacked a fuel storage facility in central Russia’s Oryol region, sparking a fire and damaging homes.
Russian air defenses destroyed Ukrainian drones in various areas, including southern and eastern regions near Ukraine. One drone caused damage to village houses but no injuries were reported.
Ukrainian forces also attacked two villages in Russia’s Belgorod region, injuring one resident. The US has announced a new $500m military aid package for Ukraine as Washington seeks to bolster Kyiv before President-elect Donald Trump takes office.
The Kremlin praised Trump for criticizing Ukrainian missile strikes into Russian territory, but said discussing European troops for peacekeeping was premature. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk discussed the possibility of foreign troops in Ukraine with French President Emmanuel Macron, while US financial sanctions are set to be introduced against Serbia’s oil company NIS due to its ties to Russia.
EU foreign ministers will impose sanctions on Russian intelligence agents over “hybrid” attacks against the bloc on Monday. A Ukrainian court sentenced a woman to 14 years in jail for working with Russian intelligence to write fake reports justifying Moscow’s invasion, while Kyiv also arrested several people accused of being Russian spies and undermining Ukrainian security.
