Spotify is rolling out a new messaging feature that allows users to share songs, podcasts, and audiobooks directly within the app. The “Messages” feature, available on mobile devices in select markets for users 16 and older, aims to provide a dedicated space for users to share their favorite content with friends and family.
The company listened to user feedback, which included the desire for an easy way to keep track of recommendations and a seamless connection experience within the app. With Messages, users can start a conversation in-app with people they’ve interacted with through Spotify, receiving suggested recipients based on shared playlists and plans.
Users have control over message requests, including accepting or rejecting them and blocking specific accounts. The company emphasizes its commitment to maintaining a safe environment, using “proactive detection technology” to scan for unlawful content and having moderators review reported issues.
To use Messages, users can tap the share icon while listening to a song or show in the “Now Playing” view, selecting a friend to send a message. The feature is accessible through the profile photo in the top left corner of the Spotify app, where users can react with emojis or text once a message request has been accepted.
