Gears of War: Reloaded, the latest remastered version of the classic game, has arrived with impressive visuals and a renewed focus on gameplay. The Coalition, Xbox Game Studios’ developer, has outdone itself in bringing this iconic third-person cover shooter to modern platforms.
With stunning 4K graphics and smooth framerates, including up to 120Hz output, Reloaded is an upgrade from the original’s 30fps campaign and 60fps multiplayer. The control options have also been expanded, allowing for more flexibility in audio, controls, and other settings.
The game’s visuals have undergone a significant makeover, with enhanced color palettes and lighting that recall Gears 5. This revamped style adds vibrancy to the environment, including details like paintings, bookshelves, and corpses. However, this improved visual fidelity comes at a cost: some minor bugs, such as checkpoint glitches and character voice drops, have been reported.
One notable aspect of Reloaded is its adherence to the original’s spirit, despite the blurring of console exclusivity lines. The DualSense controller’s adaptive triggers add a unique twist to the gameplay experience, but can be off-putting in certain situations.
The game’s AI companions, particularly on Hardcore difficulty, have been criticized for being incompetent and unreliable. This issue is a notable downgrade from the original Ultimate Edition.
Despite these minor flaws, Reloaded offers a satisfying co-op experience, thanks to the inclusion of couch co-op and online crossplay. Completing the campaign unlocks exclusive rewards, such as collectible COG Tags, which grant access to five different issues of the Gears of War comic book series.
Overall, Gears of War: Reloaded is an excellent remastered version that stays true to its roots while embracing modern improvements.
