Denver, Colorado-based airline Frontier Airlines has launched a marketing push targeting rival Spirit Airlines by offering new routes and discounted fares from Detroit Metro Airport. The carrier plans to add six new flights to and from the airport, including stops in Charlotte, North Carolina; Ft. Lauderdale, Florida; Houston; Miami; New Orleans; and Cancun, Mexico.
Fares as low as $49 will be available on select days of travel from October 20 to January 5, with some blackout dates applying. The airline’s CEO, Barry Biffle, stated that Frontier is not only focused on offering low fares but also upgrading its product and services.
Frontier’s expansion into Detroit marks a key step in the airline’s goal to become the leading low-fare carrier in the top 20 metros in the US. This move appears aimed at countering Spirit Airlines’ recent financial struggles, which include a net loss of $1.2 billion last year.
Spirit Airlines emerged from bankruptcy protection earlier this year and secured a $275 million revolving loan facility to stabilize its finances. However, Frontier’s aggressive marketing push may put pressure on the struggling carrier, particularly if it fails to keep up with the increased competition.
The airline’s new routes add more options for consumers, with CEO Biffle emphasizing the importance of affordable flight choices during a time of industry capacity adjustments. With Spirit facing financial uncertainty and Frontier pushing its own low-fare offerings, the battle for market share in the US air travel market is heating up.
