A new study from McMaster University in Canada suggests that eating more meat may be beneficial for overall health. Researchers analyzed data from nearly 16,000 adults to determine if a higher intake of animal protein would increase the risk of death from causes such as heart disease and cancer.
The results showed no increased risk of death associated with eating more animal protein. Instead, the study discovered that consuming animal proteins could offer protective benefits against cancer-related mortality, with a “modest but significant reduction” in cancer-related deaths.
The researchers found no association between total protein, animal protein, or plant protein and the risk of death from any cause. However, when analyzing both plant and animal protein together, they observed a “minimal impact of plant protein on cancer mortality and a small protective effect from animal protein.”
According to lead researcher Yanni Papanikolaou, when considering both observational data and clinical research, it’s clear that both animal and plant protein foods promote health and longevity.
