YouTube TV subscribers may lose access to Fox News and sports channels due to a fee dispute with the channel provider. The Google-owned service notified customers that if no agreement is reached by Wednesday afternoon, Fox channels including Fox Business and local stations like KTTV Channel 11 in Los Angeles could be dropped from their program lineups.
The dispute centers on payments, with YouTube stating that Fox’s requested amounts are “far higher” than what comparable content offerings receive. The company aims to reach a deal reflecting the value of the content without increasing costs for subscribers.
This dispute comes as YouTube TV faces significant growth, with streaming hours increasing 27% in 2024 and becoming the largest contributor to overall US streaming growth. Despite this, Nielsen ranks YouTube as the largest television distributor in the US by share of viewership, capturing 13.4% of all TV viewing in July.
The impact on Fox is expected to be significant, with sports fans missing out on games like Auburn-Baylor and Texas-Ohio State. The dispute also comes amidst a broader trend of disputes between programmers and pay-TV providers, which has been driven by the high cost of sports rights.
