A photograph of Turkish journalist Selcuk Acar walking onto the court during a match at the US Open has sparked controversy, with officials claiming he disregarded security instructions. The incident occurred on Monday evening, when Acar was speaking to the Daily Mail.
According to the United States Tennis Association (USTA), security had told him to stay in place, but Acar entered the court between serves on match point. The Chair Umpire also instructed him to immediately sit down, which he failed to do.
The photographer’s credential has been revoked for the 2025 US Open. Most US Open-accredited photographers know the rules around entering and exiting the court, suggesting that Acar may have been either unaware of the rule or deliberately ignored it.
Acar appeared on court during a pivotal moment in the match between Daniil Medvedev and Benjamin Bonzi, as the players were engaged in a heated argument with the umpire over a disputed call. The incident sparked pandemonium, but Medvedev later said he didn’t blame Acar for what happened, reserving his ire for the umpire.
