Todd Haynes’ gay romance film De Noche, which shut down about a year ago after Oscar winner Joaquin Phoenix left the production, is being revived. The plan is for the feature to get back on track in Guadalajara, Mexico in the New Year.
Pedro Pascal has been circling for the role, joining Danny Ramirez who was originally attached to the project. The film is set in 1930s Los Angeles and follows two men who leave their lives behind and move to Mexico.
This revival comes after a long production history that included Oscar nominations for Haynes, including original screenplay for Far From Heaven. Vachon has said that Phoenix’s departure was a “tragedy” and that he is glad the film is moving forward with Pascal on board.
Killer Films, led by Christine Vachon and Pamela Koffler, will be producing the feature alongside Pascal, following their work together on A24’s Materialists. Haynes has also worked extensively with Vachon on his previous films, including Poison, Safe, Velvet Goldmine, Far From Heaven, I’m Not There, and Carol.
Pascal is nominated for multiple awards this year, including Emmys and Golden Globes, making his casting in De Noche a promising move.
