Silksong’s release date announcement has led to a scramble of games across the industry, with several titles pushing back their launch dates to avoid conflicting with the highly anticipated metroidvania game. According to reports, at least eight games have been delayed, including CloverPit, Stomp and the Sword of Miracles, Faeland, Aeterna Lucis, Peak, Demonschool, Little Witch in the Woods, and Baby Steps.
The sudden lead-up to Silksong’s release has left game developers and publishers feeling like “little krill trying to not get eaten by a blue whale,” as noted by developer Bee Braun. The delay for CloverPit was announced with the tweet, “GAME DELAY due to Silksong (can’t wait to play) launching just a day after CloverPit, we decided to delay our release date is 26th Sept we poured our hearts into our little game, so we want to give it the best possible shot. thanks for understanding!!”
The delayed games are adjusting their own release plans to avoid overlapping with Silksong’s launch on Steam’s most wishlisted chart. The impact of this phenomenon is still unclear, and some may argue that the delays are being driven by other factors. However, it’s undeniable that Silksong’s influence is significant, with many developers showing respect for the game.
As one developer noted, “Silksong is a game we look up to with awe as developers, and eagerly anticipate as players.” Little Witch in the Woods’ team pushed back its 1.0 release date from September 4 to September 15 due to concerns about launching on the same day as Silksong.
Meanwhile, sci-fi shooter Moros Protocol has scrapped its planned September 4 release and will instead drop on September 18, “to ensure that the game releases under the best conditions for success.”
With Silksong now just over a week away from its launch, it’s unclear how long the bodies of other delayed games will continue to drop.
