Dawn Staley, the highly respected women’s basketball coach from South Carolina, has expressed regret over not getting hired as the head coach of the New York Knicks. Staley had a formal interview for the position but ultimately didn’t get the job.
Staley said she would have taken the job if offered it and believes she was properly prepared for the interview. However, during her conversation with the Knicks’ brass, she asked if they were fully prepared for how hiring a female coach would impact the organization.
“I asked them if they had considered how the media and other factors might affect the daily job,” Staley said on the “Post Moves” podcast. “It’s likely that questions about my experience as a woman in coaching positions would come up.”
Staley believes this line of questioning may have inadvertently changed the Knicks’ perception of her, leading them to reconsider their initial impression. Despite not getting the job, Staley remains confident in her abilities and is proud of her accomplishments, including winning three national championships.
The Knicks ultimately chose Mike Brown as their new head coach instead, citing his experience coaching in the NBA.
