Dezi Freeman, Australian ‘Sovereign Citizen’, Sought Over Police Shooting

A man claiming to be a “sovereign citizen” is being hunted by police in Australia after shooting dead two officers and injuring a third on his rural property. Dezi Bird Freeman, 56, has a history of anti-government views and has been involved in several confrontations with law enforcement.

Freeman, who describes himself as a “sovereign citizen”, rejects government authority and believes he is immune from laws. His extreme views have led to concerns among locals and authorities. The Australian government has warned that sovereign citizens can inspire violence.

Freeman’s behavior became increasingly erratic during the COVID-19 pandemic, with neighbors describing him as becoming more outspoken about his distrust of government restrictions. He refused to wear face masks and rejected vaccinations.

The man was involved in an attempt to have a former state premier tried for treason in 2021. He was arrested outside a court but had his charges dropped. Freeman has shown contempt for authority, shouting at judges and comparing police to Nazis.

Police are searching for Freeman, who is believed to be heavily armed and familiar with the wilderness. His family, including wife Mali and children, were known in the local community as kind and polite individuals before Freeman’s behavior became extreme.

The police hunt continues, with authorities urging caution due to Freeman’s experience as a bushman and potential hiding spots in the dense bushland near his property.
