UN Warns of Catastrophic Hunger in Gaza City Amidst Israeli Plans

A UN official has warned that if Israel proceeds with its planned offensive in Gaza City, “all hope is gone” for ending the conflict. Sam Rose, acting director of Gaza operations for UNRWA, described the dire situation in Gaza as a “population living in abject fear, humiliation and cruelty,” where parents and children are denied control over their daily lives.

The agency has been feeding 1.2 million people daily before the war began, but 6,000 trucks full of lifesaving aid, including food, medicine and fuel, have been stuck outside Gaza for months due to Israeli restrictions. Rose said this amount is enough to sustain everyone, while the European commissioner for humanitarian aid, Hadja Lahbib, denounced the plan for a military offensive.

The UN has repeatedly stated that the amount of aid entering Gaza remains far below pre-war levels, and international experts have declared a famine in the area, with nearly half a million people at risk of catastrophic hunger. The situation is dire, and Rose urged that efforts should focus on providing services and support to keep people alive rather than launching an offensive.
