A powerful typhoon, Typhoon Kajiki, has brought strong winds and heavy rain to southern China’s Hainan island and nearby Guangdong province. About 20,000 people were evacuated from hazardous areas ahead of the storm. Fishing boats returned to port as over 21,000 crew members came ashore.
The National Meteorological Center reported maximum sustained winds of 162 kilometers per hour as Kajiki moved west over the sea. Hainan’s Sanya island, a popular tourist destination, was hit with rainfall forecasts of up to 35 centimeters (14 inches). The city shut down businesses and scenic areas, while urging residents to stay indoors unless necessary.
Typhoon Kajiki is expected to make landfall in Vietnam on Monday afternoon. Authorities have banned ships from the sea and asked provinces to reinforce dykes and irrigation systems. Meanwhile, farmers are rushing to harvest their rice crops before the storm’s arrival.
