Renowned marine biologist and conservationist David Shiffman was an early advocate for science engagement on social media platforms like Twitter. He trained over 2,000 young scientists to use the platform effectively for networking, sharing research, and public outreach. However, after Elon Musk’s acquisition in 2022, Shiffman lost faith in the platform due to changes in its algorithm and moderation policies.
Shiffman joined Bluesky, one of the new platforms that had emerged as an alternative to Twitter. He was not alone in his move; many science professionals had also left Twitter for similar reasons. News outlets such as Nature, Science, and the Chronicle of Higher Education reported growing complaints about Twitter and a mass migration to Bluesky.
Intrigued by this trend, Shiffman conducted a scientific survey, which he recently published in Integrative and Comparative Biology. The study confirms that most science communicators have abandoned Twitter, with many now using Bluesky as their preferred platform.
