Metal Gear Solid Delta: A Frustrating Remake Experience

The wait is over for fans of the Metal Gear Solid series, as Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater has finally launched. Unfortunately, this remake of the 2004 stealth classic feels like a step back in terms of gameplay mechanics and structure.

As someone who has played nearly every entry in the series, I was excited to dive into this latest installment. However, after hours of playtime, I couldn’t shake off the feeling of frustration that came with navigating its outdated design. The game awkwardly blends modern visuals with old-school frustrations, making it feel like a relic from another era.

One of the main issues lies in the level structure and loading screens. While the original Snake Eater used frequent loading screens to convey the small size of levels, this approach feels particularly jarring when paired with modern visuals. The game’s reliance on these tiny levels also makes it difficult to immerse yourself in the environment.

Control-wise, however, Snake is a joy to play, similar to his appearance in Metal Gear Solid V: Phantom Pain. His movements are twitchy and responsive, making combat feel solid. But despite this, I often felt underprepared for the challenges ahead, mainly due to poor enemy detection and lackluster guidance on gadget usage.

The game’s story, however, is where it truly shines. It’s a delightfully convoluted mess that will appeal to fans of the series. Hideo Kojima’s direction and writing are as engaging as ever, making for an unforgettable experience. Despite its flaws, this remake offers a glimpse into the mind of the legendary creator.

Ultimately, Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater is a disappointing experience that fails to live up to the standards set by its predecessors. While it may have its fans among die-hard Metal Gear enthusiasts, newcomers will likely find themselves lost in the jungle with little guidance or support.
