US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has emphasized the importance of respecting minority rights in a new Syrian government. Following talks with regional diplomats, including Turkey and European Union representatives, Blinken stated that a joint communique calls for an inclusive and representative government that respects minorities’ rights.
The communique also aims to prevent terrorist groups from gaining support and affirms Syria’s unity, territorial integrity, and sovereignty. The US has made direct contact with Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) rebels, urging them to assist in locating a detained US journalist, Austin Tice.
In talks in Jordan, Blinken reaffirmed the need for an inclusive transition process, which includes elections and a new constitution. Arab diplomats attended separately and issued a statement calling for a peaceful transition, with Turkey seeking assurances that its support is backing this effort.
Turkey and the US have conflicting interests regarding some rebels, as Turkish-backed groups clash with the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). The SDF is seen as an extension of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) by Ankara. Blinken urged Turkish officials to prevent the group’s elimination and ensure its focus on securing IS camps.
The joint communique aims to send a unified message to Syria’s new interim authority, ensuring much-needed support and recognition.
