Ukraine attacked Russia’s Kirishi oil refinery overnight, sparking a brief fire at the facility in Russia’s northwest. According to Russian officials, at least 361 Ukrainian drones were downed by Russian air defense systems, including four guided aerial bombs and a US-made HIMARS missile.
The attack targeted one of Russia’s top two refineries, Kirishinefteorgsintez, which refines about 17.7 million metric tons of Russian crude per year. Ukraine’s drone command confirmed it carried out the successful strike, praising its military and special services for the long-range attacks on Russian oil installations.
Russian President Vladimir Putin warned that his country will not be intimidated by these attacks. The US has stepped up pressure on NATO countries to tighten energy sanctions on Russia, while the EU is sticking to its deadline of phasing out Russian oil and gas imports by 2028.
In other news, France has warned it may try to block some crypto firms licensed in other EU countries from operating domestically as part of a push for greater oversight.
