The United Nations has released a 72-page report stating that Israel committed four genocidal acts against Palestinians in Gaza, including the killing of civilians, causing “serious bodily and mental harm” to Palestinians, and imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group. The report also accuses Israeli leaders of inciting genocide.
According to the report, nearly 65,000 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza since October 7, 2023. Many of these casualties are women and children. The UN panel’s report found that Palestinian civilians were “directly targeted and killed” by Israeli forces despite clear knowledge of their presence.
The report also highlights Israel’s blockade on Gaza, which has had a “catastrophic impact on the living conditions of Palestinians in Gaza.” Israel’s decision to cut off supplies of water, food, electricity, fuel, and other essential supplies was described as “weaponized” by the UN panel.
The report accuses Netanyahu, President Isaac Herzog, and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant of inciting genocide. It also states that Israeli security forces have “perpetrated sexual and gender-based violence,” including rape and sexualized torture.
The UN Human Rights Council set up an independent commission to investigate these allegations in 2021. The report is considered the most authoritative finding on this issue to date, and it calls for international action to prevent genocide in Gaza.
