ABC has announced that it will suspend “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” indefinitely after the host made comments about the death of Charlie Kirk, a conservative commentator who was shot in Utah last week. The decision comes after Nexstar Media and Sinclair Broadcast Group objected to Kimmel’s comments and threatened to preempt his show.
Kimmel had made several critical comments about far-right groups and President Joe Biden on his show just days before Kirk’s death. He also criticized the media for not covering the story of far-right extremism more thoroughly.
In response, Nexstar Media said that continuing to air “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” would be “not in the public interest” at this time. Sinclair Broadcast Group announced it would run a tribute to Kirk during Kimmel’s timeslot on Friday.
The decision to suspend Kimmel’s show comes after a threat from Donald Trump, who called the move “great news for America.” However, some critics argue that Kimmel was simply speaking truth to power and holding politicians accountable for their words.
