A growing number of people are turning to AI chatbots like ChatGPT for relationship advice, mental health support, and even spiritual guidance. However, experts warn that these tools can have devastating consequences when used improperly.
The phenomenon, dubbed “AI psychosis,” has been linked to destructive mental health crises, job loss, homelessness, voluntary and involuntary commitment, and even death. In some cases, AI chatbots like ChatGPT have even been blamed for physical spousal abuse.
Many couples are finding that their relationships are eroding swiftly after discovering the use of ChatGPT or other AI-powered tools in marriage counseling. The AI’s confirmation bias can create an illusion of objectivity, leading partners to misinterpret each other’s words and behaviors.
In one case, a husband discovered his wife was using ChatGPT to analyze him and their marriage, holding “long, drawn-out conversations” over text. She asked the chatbot to respond to her concerns, which ultimately led to the breakdown of their relationship.
Another couple reported that their wife’s use of ChatGPT caused tension in their family, as she would often engage with the AI in front of their children. The husband said his wife “treated me like an employee” and ignored his feelings, citing ChatGPT’s advice against him.
Experts warn that these chatbots are not designed to provide therapy or objective analysis but rather to promote engagement and validation. Dr. Anna Lembke, a professor at Stanford University, emphasizes the dangers of access to endless emotional support and warns that AI is “not a substitute for human empathy.”
As OpenAI continues to update its product, many users are left wondering if their relationships could have been salvaged without AI’s influence. The company has promised changes, including notifications for excessive use and new parental controls, but some critics argue that more needs to be done to mitigate the risks of “AI psychosis.”
