Man Rebuilds Home from Hurricane Debris

A man named John Saunby used debris from Hurricane Helene to build his dream home after the storm damaged homes in North Carolina and beyond. Despite a history of construction, he never had the resources to make it happen.

Saunby found valuable items like porch posts, kitchen floorboards, and Black Locust bark siding in the woods. However, he couldn’t find rare Wormy Chesnut lumber, which is usually salvaged from old barns that come from the American chestnut tree.

With the help of his partner, Jenny Kimmel, a recording artist, Saunby is nearing completion of his project. She provides emotional support and serenades while Saunby works on his home. The result is a unique and eco-friendly dwelling with a soulful atmosphere.

Saunby’s story highlights the resourcefulness and determination of those affected by natural disasters. His journey showcases the potential for transformation and creativity in the face of adversity.
