President Trump has demanded that his attorney general, Pam Bondi, move quickly to prosecute figures he considers his enemies, including James B. Comey, Senator Adam Schiff, and Letitia James.
Trump wrote on social media that “we can’t delay any longer” and that justice must be served now, despite the impeachment twice and five indictments against him being over nothing. He also defended Bondi, saying she was doing a great job but needed a tough prosecutor in her office.
The demand comes after Trump ousted the federal prosecutor who failed to charge two of his most reviled adversaries, James B. Comey and Letitia James. This move raises concerns about the politicization of the Justice Department’s satellite offices and which U.S. attorneys might be next.
Several people have expressed alarm over Trump’s actions, including Chris Christie, who said that decisions should be made by qualified professionals with experience in handling criminal cases. A federal judge even found that Trump’s maneuvers to replace a prosecutor were unconstitutional.
The situation highlights the tension between Trump’s desire for retribution against those who pursued him and the Justice Department’s tradition of independence.
