Researchers have discovered that combining two medications – pilocarpine and diclofenac – can help improve vision in people with presbyopia, a common age-related condition that affects millions worldwide. The new eye drop formula, which uses a combination of these drugs at different concentrations, has shown promising results in clinical trials.
In the study, 766 participants diagnosed with presbyopia were treated with the pilocarpine-diclofenac eye drops twice a day for three months. The majority of participants saw an improvement in their ability to read close objects, with some gaining as many as four lines on the Jaeger reading chart.
The researchers found that the eye drop formula was effective in improving near vision and even eliminated the need for glasses in some patients. The benefits of the treatment were long-lasting, with the effect lasting up to 2 years, according to Dr. Giovanna Benozzi, lead author of the study.
Benozzi explained that the drops help the eye “recover” its natural ability to change focus from far to near, which is gradually lost with age. The combined formula has a dual mechanism of action, targeting the muscle responsible for focus and the lens inside the eye that becomes harder with age.
The treatment offers hope for millions of people who will experience presbyopia as they age. While more research is needed to confirm the results, the study’s findings suggest that this new eye drop formula could be a game-changer in treating this common condition.
