Generative AI is changing the way work gets done, but some jobs are more affected than others. Indeed, a job-listings platform, created an index to track these changes. The GenAI Skill Transformation Index assesses 2,900 skills and how much AI can change them. According to the study, most jobs will be transformed by AI, with some being highly transformed (26%) or moderately transformed (54%).
Jobs like software development are likely to be heavily impacted, while roles requiring physical presence, such as nursing, are less likely to be transformed. Instead, GenAI will mostly change routine tasks in these jobs. The study’s findings suggest that businesses need to redesign workflows and train workers on human strengths that AI can’t replicate.
The index groups skills into four categories: minimal transformation, assisted transformation, hybrid transformation, and full transformation. 41% of the skills assessed are at risk of high transformation, while almost half (46%) are poised for “hybrid transformation”. Human oversight will remain critical in applying these skills, but GenAI can already perform routine work.
The outlook is not all bad news: childcare, nursing, and construction are among the least likely to be transformed by AI. The study’s authors emphasize that GenAI has gotten smarter and will continue to evolve, making more skills more susceptible to automation.
