High Number of Pediatric Deaths Reported During 2024-25 Influenza Season

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has reported a significant increase in pediatric deaths during the 2024-25 influenza season, with a total of 280 reported cases as of September 13, 2025. This number represents the highest number of pediatric deaths since the start of nationally notifiable influenza-associated mortality reporting in 2004.

According to the CDC, approximately one half of children who died from influenza had an underlying medical condition, and 89% were not fully vaccinated. The median age at death was 7 years, and 61% of deaths occurred among children aged under 9 years.

The most common virus type associated with pediatric deaths was influenza A, accounting for 86% of all cases. Influenza B viruses were responsible for 14% of pediatric deaths.

The CDC emphasizes the importance of annual influenza vaccination for all persons aged 6 months and older without contraindications to prevent severe illness and death.
