Tony Blair Leads Gaza Transition Plan in US Proposal

The White House is backing a plan to have Tony Blair lead a temporary administration of the Gaza Strip, initially without direct Palestinian Authority involvement. The proposal, called the Gaza International Transitional Authority (Gita), would give Blair a mandate to be Gaza’s “supreme political and legal authority” for five years. Palestinians would not be forced to leave the territory, unlike previous US proposals.

Blair would head a secretariat of up to 25 people and chair a seven-person board overseeing an executive body running the territory. The plan aims to unify all Palestinian territories under the PA in the long run. A UN-endorsed international peacekeeping force would accompany Blair’s administration as it takes over Gaza from Israel.

The White House proposal has sparked controversy, with many Palestinians resenting Blair for his role in backing the 2003 US invasion of Iraq. Western diplomats say the plan is not a done deal and might be revised if approved by Palestinians and Arab leaders. The Trump plan linked to this one involves a ceasefire and full hostage deal.

The new proposal offers a compromise between Trump’s initial “take over” plan and the New York declaration endorsed by 140 states. Unlike these proposals, Palestinians would not be encouraged to leave Gaza under the White House plan.
